America ~ A Tribute

This band sat in the backgrounds of my youth. Whenever I hear one of their songs, I remember, "Oh yeah! I love these guys!" Today, I found out that Dan Peek passed away. Dan Peek was one of the co-founders of the band.

http://www.venturahighway.com/index.php

I remember long summers listening to the radio. Of their entire album list, the song the jumps out in my mind is Sister Goldenhair. I always wondered if he was singing about an actual sibling, or a figurative one. I love their music because it was easy to hear, soothing. Lonely People was also a favorite. I believe, however, that their most famous song (and I could be wrong) was Horse With No Name. Whatever song touched you the most, I'm certain that everyone could listen to their work and find a few songs that resonated with them.

These are some of the songs I grew up hearing. It's a walk down memory lane, and for some, it'll all be new. But, it's still relevant music and timeless. Best wishes and love to the Peek family, Dan will be sorely missed.

Make me laugh

Music has the power to make us laugh, cry, feel empowered and to find the courage we thought we didn’t have. I’ve heard it said by many that they didn’t like certain genres of music. Every genre is not going to appeal to every person. I would argue, however, that any genre is bad or without merit. All music is beneficial and has value. Some music is meant to make up feel badly, or angry. Such evocation of negative emotions does not make the music bad, only that it has brought negativity out of the listener. Music truly is that mirror that reveals the truth of ourselves and it achieves that through sound.

When one listens to speed metal, the general consensus is the feeling of racing adrenalin and power. Sometimes, the sensation feels similar to anger. If the listener doesn’t enjoy such feelings, they’re not going to like that style of music. When there are many grouped together that don’t appreciate a certain genre, it’s easy for the group to descend into mob-mentality and disparage the genre en masse. I understand well the desire to interact with like-minded people who share the same views. What challenges me more, however, is when I interact with people who have different views. The average person might get defensive or antagonistic. However, that seems to be the MO of the weak-minded. A person who has different views as I do is not immediately my enemy; a person who shares my views is not necessarily my ally.

Regardless the style(s) of music you prefer, there is one thing upon which I think we all agree: music that makes us laugh is always appreciated. Not going where you thought I was going with this... am I? I love musical comedy. And, I don’t mean comedic musical theater. I am talking about music that is hell bent to make us all laugh our butts off. I offer you these pieces in the hopes that when you’re feeling blue, low, depressed, angry, sad, lonely, or like you want to gouge out your eyeballs with grapefruit spoons... try listening to one of these gems instead.

An Homage To Adele

I apologize for being a bad, naughty blogger. It's been quite a long time since my last post. Thing is, I've been spending my time trying to fix my fricken AdSense for this blog. For the record, if you make a mistake trying to add AdSense, it will never ever get fixed nor will it ever work properly if at all.

Right now, I'm on a huge kick of getting out there and getting exposed to new artists whose work may not be making it to the local radio stations near me. This artist has certainly received airplay for her song "Rolling In The Deep." Adele has such a rich, earthy voice that when she sings you feel the power of her words in your soul. She sings, and I stare at her completely captivated. She's gorgeous with flawless skin and bright eyes. There's a late 60's - early 70's thing going on with her hair styles and with the way she wears her make-up. She's just fun to watch. When she's singing her songs live, it's nothing less than spectacular. In short, she's just amazing.

These first three entries are more of the work I discovered after searching through her credits. There's three have come to be favorites in my playlist. The very last song, you're certain to have heard. Her sound is so powerful. I hope you enjoy these offerings.

Adele

Sitting on the sea
Soaking up the sun
He is a real lover
Of making up the past
And feeling up his girl
Like he's never felt her figure before

A jaw dropper
Looks good when he walks
Is the subject of their talk
He would be hard to chase
But good to catch
And he could change the world
With his hands behind his back

You can find him sittin' on your doorstep
Waiting for the surprise
It will feel like he's been there for hours
And you can tell that he'll be there for life

Daydreamer
With eyes that make you melt
He lends his coat for shelter
Plus he's there for you
When he shouldn't be
But he stays all the same
Waits for you
Then sees you through

There's no way I could describe him
But I'll say he's just what I'm hoping for

But I will find him sittin' on my doorstep
Waiting for the surprise
It will feel like he's been there for hours
And I can tell he'll be there for life
And I can tell he'll be there for life

I heard
That you're settled down
That you
Found a girl
And you're
Married now

I heard
That your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things
I didn't give to you

Old friend
Why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back
Or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me it isn't over

Never mind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
"Don't forget me," I begged
"I'll remember," you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead."
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead,
Yeah.

You know how the time flies
Only yesterday
It was the time of our lives
We were born and raised
In a summer haze
Bound by the surprise
Of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me it isn't over.

Never mind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
"Don't forget me," I begged
"I'll remember," you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead."

Nothing compares
No worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes
They are memories made.
Who would have known
How bittersweet this would taste?

Never mind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
"Don't forget me," I begged
"I'll remember," you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead"

Never mind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
"Don't forget me," I begged
"I'll remember," you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead"

Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

When the rain is blowing in your face,
And the whole world is on your case,
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love.

When the evening shadows and the stars appear,
And there is no one there to dry your tears,
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.

I know you haven't made your mind up yet,
But I would never do you wrong.
I've known it from the moment that we met,
No doubt in my mind where you belong.

I'd go hungry; I'd go black and blue,
I'd go crawling down the avenue.
No, there's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love.

The storms are raging on the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret.
Though winds of change are blowing wild and free,
You ain't seen nothing like me yet.

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true.
Nothing that I wouldn't do.
Go to the ends of the Earth for you,
To make you feel my love

There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, and it's bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ahead and sell me out and I'll lay your ship bare
See how I'll leave with every piece of you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do

There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And it's bringing me out the dark

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

Baby, I have no story to be told
But I've heard one of you
And I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there
As mine sure won't be shared

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
But you played it with a beating

Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow

(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
We could have had it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
It all, it all, it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

We could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

You could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)

But you played it
You played it
You played it
You played it to the beat.

Introducing Sophie Zelmani

She's by no means "new." She is new to me. I heard the song "I'll Remember You," and I cried until I had no more tears left to cry. Her work is really raw and powerful. I love her voice and the sentiment behind her words. She has made eight albums so far, the last one titled "The Rain." Many people don't like this style of music because they say it's "depressing." I think it helps to stop and consider sad or negative feelings. We lament about depression. You mention that you suffer from it and four thousand people are there with some trite idiotic nonsense about simply "getting over it." If we could learn how to suffer, how to grieve and accept such negative feelings, perhaps we wouldn't be assualted to the degree that we can't breathe. Trying to repress the fact that we experience a vast array of feelings only causes strife and suffering. The fact is, life is good and bad. Embracing the negative feelings helps us learn how to manage them, and overcome them. Being able to feel the negative side of the paradigm is critical to our enjoyment of the happiness and joy that life has to offer.

Zelmani's music is exactly that: acceptance of the whole. In "I'll Remember You," her words are a bit haunting, but the essence is that we may feel hurt and loss by the loves in our life that did not love us back ~ still, we REMEMBER. The memories of those we have loved are not bitter and painful. It is the ending of those relationships that is bitter and painful. To remember, is to honor the entirety of the experience. Yes, the end hurt, but there was joy and happpiness too. Remember that amidst pain there is joy is part of learning how to live life to its fullest.

I offer you these pieces and hope that you find the healing in your own hearts and lives that you richly deserve.

Club Scene

I haven't been to a club in forever. Well, when you're a mom, forever feels like a long, long time.

Tonight, I celebrated my sister's birthday with her by dragging her to a club that once was a hopping place. Ok, THAT sentence just outed me on my age. Damn. Seriously, it's been a long time, but I had no idea just how long until I walked into what was once a club set up for dancing. Now, the RESTAURANT is set up for diners who want a moderately priced meal in a relaxed environment. Definitely NOT set up to get your freak on. ... No freakin' in the restaurant, for chrissakes; people gotta eat on those tables!!! Still, it was disheartening to see what was once a fun place turned into a mild-mannered little hole-in-the-wall restaurant.

What made the night worse (or better, depending on your perspective) was the karaoke. Or, as my brother has put it, "Scary-oke!" It was definitely SCARY. I wonder, sometimes, if people are able to hear at the same time that they are speaking (or singing, as it were). I have my doubts, let's leave it at that. Well, it would be polite to leave it at that, but I'm not going to. I'm not exactly what we in the business call, "polite." So here it is: some people can sing, everyone else happened to be in the restaurant-turned-dance-floor-karaoke-bar we patronized tonight. It was a disaster. Here's a tip, if you don't know if you're on key, just place a finger in your ear and you'll be able to hear YOURSELF over everything else. Under no circumstances is it wise to simply sing LOUDER. I mean, when you're wrong, you can really damage brains -- some of which won't be yours.

And then there's the DJ. What kills a good club faster than bad shrimp? A shitty DJ that doesn't understand music genres and how they interact. It's sort of sad if your craft is MUSIC, and you can't figure out how to manage the tempo of a crowd. Also, know your audience, and don't let their "requests" turn you into a dumbass. Just because the drifter in the corner wishes the jukebox was still on, does NOT mean you have to interrupt the mojo by inserting "More Than A Feelin'" into the rotation. Now, I love Boston like any good New Englander. But it's not a club song. And if it appears between The Macarena and Sir Mix A Lot's, "Big Butts," you have a real problem on your hands. And another thing... should you even PLAY "Big Butts?" I don't think so. I mean, two groups will dance to this song; women with big butts who will swirl and twirl their big butts in your face, and women who DON'T have big butts who will stand there looking really stupid with their tiny, narrow butts.

Something I was thinking about while watching the people "dance," was that, really... LESS IS MORE. For example, the more you try to look sexy, the more stupid you look. Ladies, "Sexy" is a state of mind, not an outfit. It's not a style of make-up, and certainly, it's not a pre-choreographed dance. Want to know what ALL men find "sexy?" Try being real, stop lying about liking sports and put a damned smile on your face. A smile; it's the simplest form of "sexy" that there is. You don't have to dislocate your pelvis, you don't have to gyrate 2 inches off the floor, you don't have to suck in your cheeks and narrow your eyeballs. Just smile. And dance!! Smile and dance and have a good time. Men think that is very sexy. So, please stop trying to out-whore me on the dance floor. For one thing, I don't care, you can win that competition. For another, you actually don't look sexy, you look desperate and stupid. And for the final blow, you're probably going to fall down and look like an ass. And stop doing moves no one does anymore with your tongue in your cheek. We KNOW that you're ancient, hell, so am I. And we know what was popular eight hundred years ago. The younguns just think we're has-beens, and you get no street cred for remembering The Fly, or the Smurf and running man is definitely NOT cool.

I thought it'd be fun to add in some club tunes and my favorites to dance to. I hope you love it and remember when you were hip enough to shake your groove thing without breaking anything. Under my favorite club videos, is a bit about line dancing... tread carefully.

What can I say about line dancing? It's dumb and looks dumb, unless you're up there doing it. This is true of a great many things. Alas, I admit, I do the line dances, if for nothing else, than to screw up the dance and make people collide into me. I find this funny. Or, spin the wrong way and get others to spin with you. That's a good time too. Or, do totally different moves, and watch the drunks try to keep up with you like they know that dance too.

Not much to say.

Please, just enjoy the music. I'm at a loss for words and even if I had them, I couldn't share them anyway.

For Those Of You Who Rock, I Salute You

First things first. We are always played last. So, this is the one space where I will make the executive decision to put us first. Hell, we're the first in, last out... so why not?

Despite inter-service rivalries, I deeply respect my cousins-at-arms. We all have a job to do and we're more than just the job we accomplish every day. Our mission is vital and must be completed. It's often an ugly job, impossible and cruel job. Sometimes, it's a thankless job and even one which we have to defend. Though some may openly despise you, and some may never thank you; your sacrifice is known by many. Covers and hats off to you all. Thank you for serving.

Here are a few more pieces that I thought would bless you and inspire you to thank a Veteran. If you ARE a Veteran, I hope that you have been inspired and feel that love and support that you so richly deserve.

This piece is of special note. I will gladly stand up, next to you and defend our country; today, tomorrow, forever.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilence.
